CiH INTERN FAQ

AN FAQ:

SO YOU’RE GONNA BE AN INTERN IN LA…

Q: Do I need a car in LA?

A: You don’t NEED a car, but it would benefit you to have one or, at least, to share one with another intern or friend. First you need to figure out what part of town your internship is in. Los Angeles is not as public transport friendly as other US cities (NY, Chicago, Boston…), so a car is definitely an asset. If you live near your internship, you can probably get away with a bicycle or even walk to work and/or major restaurants/stores/services, so brush up on geography before you rent a place.

Q: Where will I live?

A: You can check out Craigslist.org or the pay service Westsiderentals.com…both have listings sorted by location and you can also look at roommate and sublet postings. There are also chains of furnished long term hotels, two that come to mind are Oakwood and Extended Stay America. Both have multiple locations around town, so you could check them out, although they will likely not be the cheapest option. Unfortunately, UCLA housing is not ideal because their semester doesn’t end until late June, but sublets near USC or Loyola Marymount University could be a worthy option depending on your internship location.

Q: Since none of the internships are paying, can I get a paying job too?

A: Sure. Most of the internships are not full time, so you could definitely seek out a job for your “down time.” If you work for a chain store or restaurant at home, you could try to get summer employment with them…otherwise, there are plenty of places in LA to find some summer employment. Much as with housing, you might check local university career center postings. Also, some people also pick up a second internship once they are here, and although that wouldn’t be paying it would allow you to get some different experiences.

Q: What will I do besides my internship?

A: We plan to have activities and social events throughout the summer…opportunities to explore LA and meet other Cornell alumni. And LA has a wealth of entertainment, cultural, and culinary activities and places to explore.
